Former Deputy Minister of Finance Bounleua Sinxayvoravong was appointed the new governor of the central bank, as the country began to feel the impact of rising global inflation.
Public debt in Laos last year reached $14.5 billion, with about half of the amount owed to China, according to the World Bank.
But the communist country will soon open sales of US$340 million in high-interest bonds to combat inflation.
New rules require commercial banks and currency exchange kiosks to limit the daily sales of foreign exchange to 15 million kip (USD$1,002) per person, according to official KPL, the Lao News Agency.
