A fragrant rice variety from Cambodia beat Thailand's jasminee (Hom Mali) to win the title of World's Best Rice 2022 at the World Rice Conference held last week in Phuket.
The Rice Exporters Association of Thailand told the conference yesterday the winning variety is called phaka lamduan and comes from Battambang province.
The name is historical, in Cambodia and parts of Thailand.

Thailand's ONCB will meet in Bangkok today, to discuss proposals to make the plant an illegal narcotic once again.
Of course it's complicated.
For one thing, the ONCB, under the 'prime minister' Prayut, has no power to declare drugs or plants as dangerous.
Prayut's No.1 lawyer, and deputy prime minister Wissanu Krea-ngam insisted yesterday:
"The fact is that the board [ONCB] cannot delay, suspend or amend these ministerial announcements as it has no authority to do so."
And the chief No.1 booster of legal weed, junta loyalist and public health minister Anutin Charnvirakul told the Bangkok press that there is "no chance" that cannabis will ever again be listed as a narcotic.

The new governor (mayor) of Bangkok is disappointing millions of voters and supporters with his brand new, open support for Prayut and the ruling junta.
In a statement on Sunday, Chadchart Sittipunt said "errors" by anti-riot police accounted for their viscious attacks on demonstrators at the Democracy Monument last week.
"One lesson that we have learned from the clash is how we can put an end to both sides of a political protest," said Mr Chadchart.
He also insisted that the idea of designated spaces for political rallies had been well received, which it defintely has not.
A small area in front of the Bangkok City Hall is the only "free speech area" permitted by the junta. Otherwise, police and troops will fire on demonstrations, as they did on Friday.

New signs in the BTS (Skytrain) stations widen the company's ban on animals.
Effective immediately, no rider will be allowed to take his pet thoroughbred race horse, or his penguin, or any king cobra of any size.
Starting yesterday, handicapped passengers will have to board the Skytrain without their service Holsteins or monitor lizards.
Fish are banned, unless leashed.
THAILAND TRANSPORTATION HIGH-SPEED RAILWAY

Thailand's ruling junta announced on Sunday that it will open high-speech train travel to Yunnan, China, within six [6] years.
It won't be non-stop. Travellers will start at Bangkok's Bang Su Grand station and head to Korat. After a non-short delay to board new passengers, the train will be off to Nong Khai - where they will get down to board the Laos-to-China, and then change again to a Chinese train to Kunming.
Schedules, timetables and fares will be announced in due course, in about six years. Maybe seven.
By air this week, without stops, the same trip takes two and a half hours and costs around 23,000 baht in real money - 860 loonies or US$640.
BANGKOK SIGHTSEEING RIVER
