Thailand has a lot of lithium -- underwater
Good morning World. We are living the very last minutes/hours of Sunday.
This is the (compleat) Fishwrap, early edition, for Monday, January 22 of 2024.
A priest, a rabbi, and an imam walk into a bar and the bartender says:
"What is this... a joke?"
No Israeli in his right mind is willing now to think about this 'two-state solution' of any peace agreements. Israel lost trust in the peace processes because they see that terror is glorified by our neighbours.Isaac Herzog, president, Israel.

Totally opposed
Israel cannot achieve genuine security without a pathway to a Palestinian state.

THAILAND POLITICS THAKSIN
NIDA Poll: Public does not blame government for Thaksin brouhahas
A majority believes convicted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra's extended stay at Police General Hospital will not impact the government's stability,
The NIDA survey came out this way:
39 percent citizens interviewees think that Thaksin's hospital stay will have no political impact
Just over 15 percent see a negative impact on the Pheu Thai government.
A further 21.98% said the fact that Thaksin still remains in the hospital would have moderate negative consequences for the government and 18.70% anticipate a relatively small repercussion.

Asked if protests against the Department of Corrections' decision to extend Thaksin's hospital stay could plunge the country into another political crisis, as seen during the yellow-shirt and red-shirt days, answers varied:
-- 42 percent said 'definitely not'
-- 41 percent said yes, but not as violent and deadly
Another 11% believe political matters would 'definitely' escalate into a nationwide crisis, as before.
THAILAND ECONOMY LITHIUM
Thailand has just discovered that Phangnga province is located above a large deposit of lithium.
Which in fact makes Thailand the third-largest owner of lithium, in the world.
And which, also, brings both immense potential and profound challenges to Thailand.
It's James Bond Island for goodness sakes!
Thai Enquirer: https://t.ly/Om3ep
Like an iceberg, there's no visible lithium, but under those islets...
The lithium (and sodium) sites are proximate to some of Thailand's most pristine natural landscapes, areas that are not only visually breathtaking but also vital to the ecological balance and biodiversity.
Sunday columnist Roger harks back to 1972, the awful time that the Terrible Trio of Thanom-Prapass-Narong and the Revolutionary Party brought in the horrendous law that bars beer purchase in the afternoon and shuts down all restaurants and markets at midnight. And caused
The headline that went around the world.
It was originally introduced in 1972 at the time of the Thanom/Prapass regime which was cracking down on a society it thought had become too liberal.
There was simultaneously a purge on nightlife with many bars, clubs and coffee shops, including the celebrated Thermae.
The absurd situation was highlighted when three Korean visitors were arrested simply for eating at a food stall at the Pratunam Market at 1:30 a.m.
The story made the front page of the Bangkok Post with the memorable headline

The opinionated Canadian-born Limey commentator Gwynne Dyer has a look at
The trouble with events in America
Why yes, yes indeed, the Donald (Trump) is mentioned.
Dyer claims:
Recent polls show Trump and [Presidenr] Joe Biden neck and neck in the presidential race, with the gap between them often smaller than the poll's margin of error.

But time stops for no one.
If you look at the actuarial tables used by the U.S. Social Security Administration (the dole for wrinkled people), there is an 11 percent chance that one of these two men dies this year.
Sports Illustrated to cease publication?
Went Woke, Now Broke
The whose staff has got a pinkslip and/or a serious talking-to by Those In Charge.
It's a particular and pointedly sad example of the failing publications across North America.
From the 1950s SI was an erudite and lovely source of reporting and analysis of Everything About Sports. Until actually stupid-stuff in the swimsuit issue.

GLOBAL WARMING ELECTRIC VEHICLKES EVs
History of the last One Hundred and Twenty-three Years of American Electric Cars
The history of the EV is a century of failure tailgating failure. In 1901, in an article headlined “Edison’s New Storage Battery,” the Los Angeles Times declared, “The electric automobile will quickly and easily take precedence over all other” types of motor vehicles.

The trade show for quasi-totalitarian government at Davos has ended, for another year.
Walter Kirn, American critic (and known heterosexual) had comments, last year and again.

Pity the U.S. federales, forced to work on cold, cold Sunday.
The public deserves to know, 'forced' by whom? Or what?
The secretary of state (again)? A White House group? Orders of the president? Or whom?

More than half of all comments at Reddit.com noted that the group was (undoubtedly) a fake 'right-wing demonstration' by an FBI honeypot.
