The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak research institution of Singapore (formerly the highly respected Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) surveys the 10 members of ASEAN each year, asking one question:
 If you are forced to make the choice, which of the two rivals will you choose?
Last year it was 38.9 percent for China and 61.1% for the U.S.
This year it's way different, and the trend is obvious: 50.5 percent chose China while 49.5% picked the United States.

Specifically, seven out of the 10 chose China (no surprises):
 Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.
But the three (3) that strongly prefer America are important: Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam.
